Report on Buyer Seller Meet in South Africa & Brazil under Focus Africa & Focus LAC Programme of the MOC, Govt. of India

 

Buyer Seller Meet – THE BACKGROUND

 

The proposal to organize a Buyer Seller Meet in Africa & Latin America was submitted to the Ministry of Commerce under the integrated “Focus Africa” and “Focus LAC” programme for approval. The country choosen were South Africa & Brazil. Two of the most dynamic economies in the developing world and regional economic super powers.

 

As suggested by the Consulate General of India in South Africa & Brazil, Johannesburg and Sao Paulo were choosen as the venues of the Buyer Seller Meets. The Council participated in the SARCDA International Fair in Midrand, Johannesburg held from 17th – 19th March 2006 during the Buyer Seller Meet. The Buyer Seller Meet in Sao Paulo was held at Hotel Crowne Plaza in the busy Business District of the metropolis.

 

The support of the Consulate General of India in Johannesburg and Sao Paulo was significant in organisisng the Buyer Seller Meet. Invitations were sent to Buyers, Wholesalers and Importers of handicrafts in South Africa & Brazil. Advertisements were also released in Valorb on 20th March 2006 and Gazeta Mercantil & Diario do Comercio on 21st March 2006 in Brazil. The Consulate General of India also did a telemarketing campaign to promote the Buyer Seller Meet and maximize visits by the local business community to the meet.

 

 
 
 
Brief Report & Achievements in South Africa

 

South Africa – 17, 18 & 19 March 2006 at SARCDA

International 2006 Fair at Gallagher Estate, Midrand.

 

 

The Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts organized a Buyer Seller Meet in South Africa with direct participation in the SARCDA International 2006 trade fair from 17 – 19 March 2006. The exhibition is widely recognized as one of Africa’s premier gifts & dιcor trade event.

 

The 16-member trade delegation was lead by Mr. Ashok Boob, COA Member – EPCH. The products in focus comprised jute, cotton/canvas and leather bags, high fashion garments & accessories, furnishings, carpets & floor coverings, EPNS ware, paper stars & christmas decorations, stainless steel utensils, beads, beaded jewellery & costume jewellery as well as curtain rods & accessories.

 

The response received by the members was encouraging and the delegates reported on the spot business and trade enquiries to the tune of US $ 374,200.00 during the 3 days of the event. The delegates were also successful in contacting South African importers/wholesaler’s, retailers and storeowners during the SARCDA International Trade Fair during the buyer seller meet.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Brief Report & Achievements in Brazil

 

Brazil – Sao Paulo – 22nd & 23rd March 2006.

 

 

The Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts organized a Buyer Seller Meet in Sao Paulo, Brazil with the active association of the Consulate General of India. Hon’ble Ambassador of India H. E. Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri, Consul General of India, Mr. Yogeshwar Varma and consul (Commercial), Mr. Rajeev Kumar were actively involved in the promotion and success of this Buyer Seller Meet.

 

The 16-member trade delegation reached Brazil after its visit to South Africa. The delegation visited the International gifts Fair (one of the biggest trade fairs of this sector in Brazil) in Sao Paulo on the 21st March 2006 and generated a good number of trade enquiries. The visit to the fair gave a feel of the market potential and the kind of items that are in trend in Brazil.

 

The Buyer Seller meet was organized in Hotel Crowne Plaza. Over 200 business visitors visited the meet held on the 22nd & 23rd March 2006. The response received by the members was encouraging and the delegates reported on the spot business and trade enquiries to the tune of US $ 627,800.00 during the 2 days of the meet.
